Fuel Cell Infrastructure Survey 2009

Fuel Cell Today, the leading organisation for market based intelligence on the fuel cell industry, has published its latest Survey on hydrogen infrastructure developments.

2009 will see over 150 stations open with light duty stations representing a majority, while the remaining stations are split evenly between transit and other applications.  Many transit bus stations also accommodate light duty vehicles, and this trend of multi-purpose stations is likely to continue as hydrogen refuelling stations are built at hubs such as airports.

At this stage, governments continue to play an integral role in the development of hydrogen infrastructure. While the US federal government seems to be trying to minimise its role in encouraging hydrogen refuelling stations, California and the European Union appear to be ready to fill the funding vacuum.  We are also observing the beginnings of a tipping point as hydrogen infrastructure goes from small, experimental stations towards larger-scale fuelling and public stations.  This is the next stage of market growth, as infrastructure providers determine how to meet the higher volume demand for fuel and provide public access to stations.

In 2009, Fuel Cell Today is introducing several new graphs showing the distribution of refuelling stations across regions, by type of application, and by delivery type.  We have also decided to include forklift refuelling in our dataset for the first time. As a result, we will not be comparing this year’s hydrogen refuelling to the figures from year’s past as the comparison would not be meaningful.

The Survey also analyses the market drivers for infrastructure development over the next ten years and provides forecasts of stations deployed by region. There is a also a full review of government legislation and other initiatives which will support this growth, as well as an up to date overview of key companies in this sector.
