The Fuel Cell Small Stationary Survey 2009
Fuel Cell Today, the leading organisation for market based intelligence on the fuel cell industry, has published its latest Survey on small stationary fuel cells.
This new Survey reveals that in 2008, deliveries of fuel cells for small stationary applications rose by 79 per cent to reach 4,000 units. Over 95 per cent of these units were proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolytes.
The majority of the systems were sold for Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) applications but there were advances in the use of small units for micro Combined Heat and Power (mCHP) applications too. 2008 saw the continued shifting to commercial deployment of UPS systems, while the residential sector has seen the launch of two major European demonstration projects for mCHP and further progress in Japan’s residential programme.
The Survey includes unique analysis of the prospects for small stationary fuel cells over the next ten years, including forecasts of units shipped by application, by electrolyte type and by hydrogen fuel source. “Going forward we expect to see a step-change increase in units shipped to over six million units in 2019 with a fairly even split between UPS and mCHP by 2019”, it states.
There is a full review of government legislation and other initiatives which will support this growth, as well as an up to date overview of the companies which already have or are close to having commercial products ready to launch into this expanding sector.
