Major car manufacturers announce continued commitment to fuel cell technology for consumer autos
Three major car manufacturers, Honda, General Motors, and Toyota have announced that they will continue to pursue developing fuel cell technology for consumer automobiles in spite of a Department of Energy announcement that would cut funding for fuel cell technology development for automobiles by £788 million ($1.2 billion).
In addition, Honda has begun selling its FCX Clarity in California while GM is loaning 115 Chevrolet Equinox sport-utility vehicles to individuals and firms. Toyota announced it would begin offering fuel cell cars in 2015 this past January while Hyundai and Daimler AG are also planning to develop fuel cell vehicles for retail.
Carmakers may be encouraged by the state of California’s £26.3 million ($40 million) investment in hydrogen fuelling stations as well as Japan, Germany and South Korea’s expanding fuel-cell programs.
