AFC Agrees Improvement Plan for its Alkaline Fuel Cell Technology

Fuel cell developer AFC Energy has agreed a number of improvements to its technology with its prospective customer, chemicals giant Akzo Nobel.

A system test on AFC's 3.5kW fuel cell system completed last September saw electrical output and durability for the technology not reaching target levels.

Reviewing the results of the test over the winter, the company has now said it has identified improvements it will now make, including upgrades to the electrode materials and fluid flow, as well as revising specifications for some of the system components.

The company will also improve its manufacturing process with a more automation.

After meeting with Akzo Nobel earlier this month, the two companies have agreed a way forward for the project, which aims to deliver and install a fuel cell system at the chemical firm's Bitterfeld site in Germany.

AFC said delivery of the system to Bitterfeld is now expected to take place in the coming months.
