Fuel Cell Today to Release its 2nd Annual Industry Review, Fuel Cells: Emerging Markets

The Fuel Cell Today Industry Review 2009

Fuel Cell Today, the leading organisation for market based intelligence on the fuel cell industry, is to launch its second annual review of the fuel cell industry on 28th January 2009. This is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the outlook for successful commercial development of fuel cells, a clean, reliable technology capable of providing power for a range of applications.

Following the 2008 Review’s assessment of the pace of commercialisation of fuel cell technology in established markets, the 2009 edition identifies and measures the prospects for fuel cell adoption in the emerging markets of India, Latin America and the Middle East.

Two other important new elements appear in the 2009 Review. The previous two-year forecasts of fuel cell shipments have been significantly extended - to five years, covering the period 2009 to 2013. The Review also introduces a survey of hydrogen feedstock choice – an increasingly flexible one as a variety of fuel reformers for hydrogen production for fuel cells become available.

The Current State of the Industry

The 2009 Review reports that the fuel cell industry is growing and gaining real market traction in key early applications, including combined heat and power for buildings, back-up power to base stations, combined cooling and power units for datacentres and off-grid power solutions to remote communities.

The industry has seen a 50%  increase in units shipped, from 12,000 systems in 2007 to 18,000 in 2008, with stationary and portable applications for fuel cells continuing to log steady growth rates. Low temperature fuel cells continue to dominate shipments in terms of numbers, contributing over 80% of all new units shipped. However, high temperature fuel cells account for the majority of MW shipped.

Fuel Cells Potential in Emerging Markets

New regions are opening up not only for adoption of fuel cell technology but also as manufacturing bases and sources of investment funds. “Significant funds for clean tech exist in the Middle East which, if mobilised, could very quickly remove the current lead of established markets in the USA, Canada, Germany and Japan in this growing industry”, says Dr. Kerry-Ann Adamson, Principal Analyst at Fuel Cell Today.

Three of the largest emerging markets are India, with its tiger economy status, the Middle East, with its desire to diversify its economies, and Latin American nations with their vast resources of renewable energy. Each of these regions, featured in depth in the Review using independent analytical information unique to Fuel Cell Today, has a different suite of drivers for change, but all could start to see uptake and diffusion of fuel cell technology in the next five years.

How to buy the Review

Fuel Cells: Emerging Markets is a benchmark study on the state of the fuel cell sector worldwide in 2008 and an analytical tool on a number of important emerging market regions, and is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the sector. The 2009 Review is priced at £500 and can be ordered from review@fuelcelltoday.com
