Electric Hydrogen delivers fuel cell and hydrogen solution for McKesson Canada

Electric Hydrogen (EH) has announced the delivery of a complete indoor hydrogen supply infrastructure for a fuel cell back-up power system for McKesson Canada. The fuel cells provide up to 6.4 kW of continuous back-up power, and the complete system provides ~ 30 kWh of back-up power capacity, supplementing the uninterruptible power supply for McKesson Canada servers.

EH scope of supply included a standard, rack-mounted hydrogen generation system, 27,000 litres of actively controlled, rack-mounted, solid state metal hydride storage. The entire system was integrated into three standard server racks enclosed in the same cabinets as line-of-business servers. Proprietary EH controls for system operation and safety permit installation of the entire system with other equipment in the server room. The on-site hydrogen generator automatically recharges hydrogen storage after an outage, ensuring the highest level of fuel cell availability without the need for delivery and replacement of industrial gas bottles. Solid state metal hydride storage facilitates a complete, indoor, rack-mounted solution without piping hydrogen from secure outdoor fuel storage facilities.

Dimitris Polygenis, VP Specialty for McKesson Canada said, “Fuel cell back-up power provides another level of security to our operation that gives McKesson Canada and our customers the comfort that our data centre has the highest level of reliability, scalability, and security available. The system was factory tested in advance and installed in a day along with other system upgrades with no interruption in our operations. Additionally, I am thrilled that we were able to implement an environmentally friendly solution. McKesson Canada is committed towards environmental sustainability. This solution allows us to keep approximately two-tonnes of hazardous batteries out of circulation each year”

William Bugyra, President of Electric Hydrogen, said “Hydrogen fuel cells provide a level of reliability and availability that has not previously been available for critical back-up power for data centres, telecommunications, hospitals and many other mission critical applications. Our on-site hydrogen fuel solutions enhance the availability of fuel cell power systems. They are cost effective, easy to install and eliminate the need to manage external fuel supply. We have developed an innovative product to address the fuel supply issue that will make fuel cells a viable and environmentally friendly option for many more customers.”
