New bipolar plate module receives f-cell award

A novel bipolar plate module with internal cooling flowfield and integrated seal for the assembly of fuel cell stacks developed by Schunk Kohlenstofftechnik, Freudenberg Fuel Cell Components and Viessmann Werke was awarded the f-cell Award in Gold on 29 September. The f-cell Award 2008 is awarded by the State of Baden-Württemberg and Region Economic Development Corporation Stuttgart in co-operation with Energie Baden-Württemberg.  It was presented during the f-cell congress in Stuttgart.  According to the jury, the development led to "significant cost savings and can considerably accelerate the establishment of the value-added chain in Europe."

The project involved Schunk developing a special cooling module consisting of two molded graphite bipolar plates. In contrast to the construction previously used, with multiple individual components, the newly-developed, highly-integrated assembly group enables a high degree of stack assembling security to be achieved, at the same time ensuring a long lifetime for the fuel cell.

Two projects shared the Silver Award: the Zemships project, the worlds first fuel cell powered ship, and DLR manned airplane that takes off and flies exclusively with a fuel cell. The f-cell Award in Bronze was shared by Daimler AG and the Rotarex Group of Luxemburg.
