Marine boss says fuel cells are the future

Hydrogen fuel cell technology will play a significant part in helping to reduce the emissions of harbour tugs in the future, it has been suggested.

According to Michiel Wijsmuller, managing director of WorldWise Marine Engineering (WWM), hydrogen fuel cells "are the future".

"Our clients want harbour tugs that can safely and cleanly operate in densely populated areas, so we have gone as far as we can with today's technology to achieve zero emission conditions by designing an electric propulsion system, powered by fuel cells running on hydrogen and also battery back-up during standby and mobilisation periods and only firing up diesel generators when substantial bollard pull is required," he commented.

WWM is currently working alongside operators Iskes and Smit to develop a 50-tonne low emission harbour tug.

Founded in 1975, WWM previously operated under the name Marman and specialises in the monitoring of tug boats, supply vessels and barges.
