UQM delivers motor for fuel cell locomotive
Alternative energy developer UQM Technologies has announced the delivery of its PowerPhase 100 motor to Vehicle Projects lLC, for use in a fuel cell-powered locomotive.
The fuel cell locomotive is being developed by a consortium of companies and state bodies, including the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Company and the US Department of Defence.
UQM say the fuel cell-powered locomotive can potentially reduce pollution levels and is not dependant on oil.
Commenting on the project, Arnold Miller, president of Vehicle Projects LLC, said: "The world burns millions of barrels of oil for energy and the waste carbon is then emitted to the atmosphere. Because fuel cells don't rely on oil as a fuel source, they solve these two issues."
Mr Miller added that the US was facing significant environmental challenges and "energy insecurity", as a result of reliance on finite resources.
Established in 1998, Vehicle projects LLC develops fuel cell-powered vehicles for use in heavy industry.
