PolyFuel acknowledges US Department of Energy's support

Fuel cell technology company PolyFuel has credited the US Department of Energy for the company's most recent fuel cell advances.

PolyFuel president and chief executive Jim Balcom said the support was "critical and timely" in aiding the company's advances in portable fuel cell technology.

"Market-driven forces are not enough to fuel certain advances that involve deep science, major infrastructure changes, changes in the regulatory environment, or cut across multiple disciplines," he comments.

"But when the potential benefits to society are great enough - either directly, or through technology fallout - then the government can and must play a role."

Mr Balcon made the comments at the second annual tech policy summit in Hollywood.

The company first received assistance from the Department of Energy several years ago when it launched a programme to develop a fuel cell-powered laptop.

California-based PolyFuel was established in 1999 and is currently listed on the London Stock Exchange AIM market.
