Mercedes 'very, very serious' about mass producing fuel cell cars
Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Mercedes-Benz, has announced that his company is 'very, very serious' about mass producing fuel cell cars. Dr Zetsche is reported in The Times as saying that mass production of fuel cell cars will begin in 2010 at an extremely low level and will focus on the B-Class model. Zetsche says that he is convinced that by 2014-15, mass production of distinctive, economically competitive fuel-cell models will have begun, eventually rising to 100,000 vehicles a year.
Following cautious announcements on fuel cells from GM and Toyota at this week’s Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz, and its parent company Daimler appear bullish about fuel cell vehicle development. Daimler recently bought the majority share of Ballard’s automotive fuel cell business together with Ford as junior partner. Honda, who will be leasing 100 fuel cell cars to customers in California this year, was also at Geneva displaying its production-version FCX Clarity.
