British Gas: Fuel cell technology is an exciting development

Fuel cell technology is an "exciting development" in boiler production, according to energy provider British Gas.

British Gas spokesman Julian Mears says that fuel cell technology is "very different" to the systems used in older boilers and will significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

The company announced plans to begin production of fuel cell boilers earlier this year.

"These new fuel cell boilers will actually generate power for their house inside the house. We estimate they'll cut CO2 emissions by about 50 per cent and will cut bills by about 25 per cent," he comments.

Mr Mears claims that energy efficient products are increasing in popularity and adds that the company fitted 100,000 environmentally-friendly boilers in the last year.

British Gas says new fuel cell-powered boilers will generate heat and electricity through electrochemical reactions, as opposed to drawing energy from the grid and losing power during transportation.

According to company estimates new fuel cell boilers will produce two and a half tonnes less CO2 a year than older boilers.
