General Motors unveils fuel cell Chevrolet

General Motors is showcasing the new fuel cell version of its Chevrolet Equinox SUV at the Philadelphia Auto Show, according to reports.

The is able to go 160 miles on a single tank of hydrogen.

The leading automaker has already spent around $1 billion in its efforts to become the world's first company to mass-produce a hydrogen vehicle, delawareonline.com reports.

John F Smith, group vice president for global product planning, said that General Motors' fuel cell vehicles would only become available to the public in the next decade.

Delaware, which is close to Philadelphia where the vehicle will be showcased, has emerged as a leading centre for fuel cell development.

The university has received part of a $4.6 million grant from the US Department of Energy to work on a number of aspects of fuel cell design.

Delaware senator Tom Carper said that fuel cell development is important for the US because it will free it from dependence on foreign oil and help reduce the amount of pollutants.

He told the website: "The payoff for America is significant."
