DPUC approves 16.2 MW FuelCell Energy projects

The Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control (DPUC) has approved 16.2 megawatts (MW) of projects incorporating six of FuelCell Energy's fuel cells, it has been announced.

FuelCell Energy is a leading manufacturer of high efficiency power plants for utility, industrial and commercial customers.

The approvals form part of Connecticut's Project 150 - an initiative set up to build and operate 150 MW of renewable generating capacity in the state.

The project approvals total 109.2 MW including the 16.2 MW projects and the DPUC has also given contingent approval to a further 19.6 MW Danbury 'Triangle' fuel cell project.

Daniel Brdar, chairman and CEO of FuelCell Energy, said: "This draft decision marks a milestone on the path to Connecticut fulfilling its mandate to satisfy its Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) for 800 MW of clean power generation.

"By including 16.2 MW of our ultra-clean DFC3000 fuel cells, the DPUC has confirmed fuel cells are an important part of Connecticut's Project 150 clean energy programME."

He added: "With their 24.7 reliability, fuel cells can relieve electric grid congestion while reducing the need for new generation, transmission and distribution investment."

The projects approved are DFC-ERG Milford - a 9.0 MW project which pairs three DFC3000 power plants with a 1.8 MW pipeline turbo expander - and Stamford Hospital - a 4.8 MW project for the hospital using two of the power plants in a combined heat and power application.

The third is at Waterbury Hospital - a 2.4 MW project using one DFC3000 power plant providing lower cost thermal energy and electricity to the grid.
