Zemships project enters new phase

The keel has been laid to signal the next phase of a project to build the world's first fuel cell-powered passenger vessel, it has been reported.

The Zemships (Zero Emission Ships) vessel is due to enter service in the summer of 2008 in Hamburg, and will carry up to 100 passengers per trip around the Alster and harbour area.

Powered by two PM Basic A 50 50kW fuel cell systems, the vessel will be proof of the viability of fuel cell technology, according to Anno Mertens, Zemships project manager at Proton Motor.

"With the integrated Proton Motor fuel cell hybrid drive the vessel isn't only emission-free, it's almost twice as efficient as conventional diesel ships," he told BYM Marine and Maritime News.

"This project shows that our products are ready for everyday use. It offers an opportunity to open up a whole new market and extends our pioneering role in the cleantech industry."

Funding for the project is being provided by the European Union.
