Angstrom fuel cell successfully integrated into Motorola handset

Angstrom Power, a Canadian developer of fuel cells designed to replace
batteries in handheld electronics like mobile phones, has announced their ‘Micro
Hydrogen Platform’, which has already been integrated into a popular Motorola
handset and successfully tested for six months. Industry analysts who have been
briefed on the technology said it has changed their view, not only of the viability
of micro fuel cells running handheld electronics, but of the inevitability of micro
fuel cells making significant inroads in lithium ion battery territory in the near-term.
This announcement is a combination of the first successful integration into a standard product, breakthroughs in recharge technology, and changes in government and ICAO International Civil Aviation Organization regulations that should allow the use of fuel cell powered devices on aircraft. The company has said that the fuel cell powered Motorola mobile phone offers twice the run-time of batteries, with recharge times on the order of 10 minutes.
Angstrom’s EverOn technology was successfully integrated intoMotorola MOTOSLVR handsets for the trial, with no modification to the outside dimensions of the devices. The trial devices did not rely on the use of any battery -- instead, they drew power from Angstrom’s Micro Hydrogen platform, which is comprised of a fuel cell architecture, micro-fluidics and a refillable hydrogen storage tank. Angstrom has demonstrated research results showing twice the talk-time of the equivalent battery-powered devices in side-by-side testing.
Angstrom is currently collaborating with world-leading battery manufacturers, portable electronic device makers and mobile service providers towards the commercialization of its Micro Hydrogen technology.
