Honda FCX proves hit with Californian family

The first family to enter into a two-year lease of a Honda FCX fuel cell car in California has signed up for a further year, it has been revealed.

According to Jon Spallino, while fuelling remains the main stumbling block to the more widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles, usage is getting easier as a spate of hydrogen fuelling stations are opening across the state.

As a result, he and his family, who live in Redondo Beach, have decided to stick with the innovative fuel cell vehicle for at least another 12 months.

"The frustration has been in getting fuelling stations online," he told the New York Times.

"But the silver lining is that a few have come online very recently that have made a lot of that problem go away for me."

Mr Spallino, who agreed to trial the Honda FCX to help with the advancement of fuel cell technology and the environment, currently fills up his car once or twice a week and averages 170 miles on a tank of fuel.

He expects another fuelling station to open in the Redondo Beach area within the next 90 days.
