Canadian companies making progress in micro fuel cell development
Two Canadian firms are at the forefront of the development of micro fuel cells, it has been reported.
According to John Tak, president of industry association Hydrogen & Fuel Cells Canada, British Columbia firms Tekion and Angstrom Technology are at the forefront of the sector along with rivals in the US, Japan and Korea.
"It's pretty exciting, when you see what's happening globally, that two of the leading companies are in Canada," he told CanWest News Services.
Tekion has recently developed a new micro fuel cell that will come onto the market next year and can be used to recharge mobile phones, digital cameras, iPods and other electronic devices.
It runs on formic acid - the chemical emitted as venom by biting ants and bees - will sell for less than CA$100 and is roughly the size of a BlackBerry.
"It's like carrying your wall plug around with you," Neil Huff, CEO of Tekion, told the same publication.
"It'll charge your cellphone at the same rate the wall plug does."
