Honda FCX on display at University of Albany
UAlbany's Green Commerce Committee, an offshoot of the UAlbany Goes Green project, put in a special request to the Office of General Services (OGS) for the car to be displayed on campus, according to committee member Ken Jones.
The OGS manages the use of the Honda FCX on behalf of the State of New York, which leases the vehicle from Honda for $500 a month.
OGS has a small, compressed hydrogen fuelling station on the Harriman State Office Campus in Albany, and on a full tank of fuel the FCX can go around 210 miles.
It is normally used by state agencies such as the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.
Honda leases the cars to New York and other states at reduced prices so that data can be collected on their usage.
According to Mr Jones, fuel cell vehicles will soon be used by everyday consumers rather than just a select few for trial purposes.
"This is what the future might look like," he told the Times Union.
"It is consumerism that drives the market. These are alternatives to fossil fuels that might work."
The UAlbany Goes Green initiative aims to encourage university staff and students to "think and go green" through recycling and conservation projects.
