Ballymena firm profits as oil prices soar

Wrightbus, which is working with ISE Corporation to provide ten hydrogen-powered buses for London, has revealed that demand for its products is augmenting as the price of oil rises.

The Ballymena, County Antrim-based firm said that it was receiving inquiries from all over the world for its new bus, which it says offers a "sustainable, safe and clean power source" which is especially beneficial in densely populated cities.

"As there is no carbon in the fuel, hydrogen-powered vehicles produce no carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or particulate emissions," Wrightbus business development director Jonathan Poynton told the BBC.

The company is also in the process of delivering 50 hybrid street cars for Las Vegas, with the first shipments due in early 2008.

Of the ten vehicles to be supplied for use in London, five will be hydrogen fuel cell buses and the remainder hydrogen internal combustion engine buses.

They will all join London's bus fleet by 2010.

"By the time of the London Olympics in 2012, mayor of London Ken Livingstone wants to have hundreds of these hybrid vehicles on the roads," Mr Poynton explained.
