Project Driveway 'shows GM's commitment to helping the environment'

General Motors' (GM) Project Driveway will help to end the debate about the role of the automobile in damaging the environment, it has been claimed.

According to Dan Hancock, GM Powertrain vice president for engineering, the initiative, which will see 100 Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell electric vehicles handed over to the public as part of a trial, will have an explicit bearing on the development of future electric vehicles.

Mr Hancock believes electronic vehicles are the solution to both the environmental and economic concerns surrounding automobiles currently being aired.

"What we learn will directly influence future electrically driven vehicle generations and ultimate market acceptance," he told Chevyvoltforum.com.

"With Project Driveway, GM is demonstrating its commitment to electrically driven vehicles - whether the source of the electricity comes from a lithium-ion battery or a hydrogen fuel cell - as the answer for helping take the automobile out of the environmental debate and reducing our dependence on petroleum.

"The Equinox fuel cell electric vehicle demonstrates an important milestone on our pathway to electrically driven vehicle development."

The Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell electric vehicle is powered by GM's fourth-generation fuel cell propulsion system.
