Minister opens Ottowa's first permanent hydrogen fuelling station

Gary Lunn, Canada's minister of natural resources, has officially opened Ottowa's first permanent hydrogen fuelling station.

The move forms part of the ongoing Hydrogen on the Hill project, which aims to improve public awareness of the capability of hydrogen energy technologies and the role Canadian firms are playing in working towards the creation of a hydrogen economy.

There are now five permanent fuelling stations operational in Ontario and ten in Canada - the newest of which will be used to provide fuel for three hydrogen-powered buses run by the Canadian senate.

Located at the Natural Resources Canada Booth Street Campus in the city, the fuelling station has been funded through contributions by Natural Resources Canada-backed body Canadian Transportation Fuel Cell Alliance and Air Liquide Canada.

"We have invested seriously in hydrogen research and technology and see today's fuelling station opening in Ottawa as an integral part of our energy and environmental strategy to develop a secure delivery and storage infrastructure capability," commented Pierre Gauthier, Air Liquide Canada's director of Hydrogen Energy, North America.

"We are proud to be taking the first steps in helping build Canada's future hydrogen highway."
