GM to raise fuel cell awareness in China
Five alternatively-fuelled vehicles - including the Chevrolet Equinox fuel cell electric car - will be displayed in Beijing this week as part of a plan by General Motors (GM) to emphasise its green credentials to the Chinese market.
It is expected that total vehicle sales in China will reach nine million this year, and Dow Jones has noted that demand for alternatively-fuelled vehicles is experiencing particularly strong growth.
As a result a number of firms have been concentrating on the development of alternative energy vehicles in order to exploit this market.
This is also the case for GM, as confirmed by Kevin Wale, the president of the group's China division.
"Our goal is to demonstrate the real progress that has been made and the potential that exists today for reducing vehicle emission and the world's dependency on petroleum," he told Dow Jones.
New rules have recently been announced by the National Development and Reform Commission which will form guidelines for the launch of fuel cell and hydrogen-powered vehicles in China.
The rules have been introduced as part of an attempt to reduce emissions and safeguard the environment.
