White Plains hydrogen station to open next month

A hydrogen fuelling station is to open at a garage in White Plains, NY next month, and will power three cars and two pick-up trucks to be delivered to the city within a similar timeframe, it has been announced.

Shell is scheduled to complete the construction of an electrolysis plant at a garage in Kensico Avenue in September, and has also partially funded the purchase - along with two state authorities - of five General Motors vehicles which will run on hydrogen.

Four of the five vehicles - three cars and a pick-up truck - will run solely on hydrogen, while a further pick-up will be fuelled by a blend of hydrogen and natural gas which will also be produced at the facility.

While Shell is promoting the use of hydrogen as a fuel by setting up similar hydrogen stations across the country, a spokesperson for the firm believes it will be a further ten years before hydrogen-powered vehicles - like those equipped with hydrogen fuel cells - are widely used.

"We see ever-increasing numbers of fuel cell vehicles each year," Tim O'Leary, a spokesperson for Shell Hydrogen, told the Associated Press.

"But as far as commercialisation, mass production, car manufacturers say that's not going to be for quite some time, the middle of next decade and out."
