M&M and Shell complete first phase of hydrogen transportation study

Indian automotive manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has completed the first phase of its 'pre-feasibility study on hydrogen-based transportation in India', it has been confirmed.

The study, a joint venture with Shell, encompassed an investigation into hydrogen supply, infrastructure, and the development of hydrogen vehicle platforms - such as hydrogen internal combustion engines and fuel cells - in India.

In addition, potential lighthouse projects - where car manufacturers and energy providers combine to develop new technologies with governmental support - were discussed.

It was agreed that the areas of local fuel supply, fuel distribution and storage, automobile technology, safety, commercial viability, the environment and public/private partnerships warranted further attention.

"M&M is excited to announce the completion of this study on hydrogen transportation in India with Shell and looks forward to further initiatives that will advance the hydrogen economy in India," commented Dr Arun Jaura, senior vice president for global product development and R&D at M&M.

"Given the uncertainty of petroleum prices and availability of petroleum products, alternate energy efficient vehicles are of critical importance."
