Germany unveils bid to be micro fuel cells production leader

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has revealed funding will be provided by the state to ensure the country is at the forefront of micro fuel cells production, according to heise online.

Projects to receive funds will be those that "take a holistic view of systems development and focus on market-orientated mass products", it has been reported.

In all, €18 million (£12.16 million) is to be provided for the initiative - which is officially entitled 'Trailblazing Micro Fuel Cell Innovations' - with beneficiaries set to be those that have already been earmarked in an earlier micro fuel cells R&D grants programme, which was also run by the BMBF.

The "most promising projects" from that programme have been picked to receive further support, including the 'Mobile and Portable Fuel Cell' venture, which is headed by SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG, the 'PemGen' mission, led by Varta, and 'BZ-Battext'.

All of the above schemes will receive funding of €2 million (£1.35 million) each.
