New breakthrough in hydrogen production announced

A new proposal from researchers at Virginia Tech, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the University of Georgia would see polysaccharides - sugary carbohydrates - from biomass being used to produce low-cost hydrogen, according to the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

'Synthetic enzymatic pathway' research, which is published in the latest issue of online Public Library of Science journal PLoS ONE, details how academics at the said institutions are using 13 enzymes to convert polysaccharides and water into hydrogen.
