Siemens' solid oxide fuel cell tested

A new prototype solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) using high power density technology has been tested successfully by Siemens.

Siemens Power Generation carried out the tests on the SOFC, which is currently under development by the Solid State Energy Conversion Alliance (SECA) at the US Department of Energy (DOE).

SECA is an alliance formed in 1999 which brings together members of the US government, industry and scientific community to help develop solid oxide fuel cell technology commercialisation for pre-defined markets.

An entire system using SECA technology has been in operation for over 2,800 hours, the organisation confirmed, with the solid oxide fuel cells said to meet and exceed the technical and financial objectives of SECA's programme.

The system is the first tested by SECA to show no degradation in either its performance or in the fuel cells, indicating strong potential for the technology's lifetime, an important factor in commercialisation.

Siemens is expected to deliver pre-commercial models in its 5KW to multi-megawatt range over the next three years, depending on their rating.

Ultimately, SECA hopes that its SOFC systems will enter the commercial mainstream, generating clean syngas-fuelled power from domestic coal resources under the DOE's FutureGen programme.
