Nissan to develop and sell lithium-ion battery cars rather than fuel cell vehicles
According to Japan's Nihon Keizai newspaper, the car maker plans to have the cars on the market within three years.
The cars will be powered by lithium-ion batteries, however, rather than the fuel cell technology currently being favoured by its fellow car makers including Honda and General Motors.
The paper claims that the planned developments by Nissan reflect the car maker's desire to catch up with its rivals in the field of 'eco-friendly' transport.
Nissan is also expected to develop gas-electric hybrid models by 2010, Nihon Keizai said, alongside bioethanol-powered cars developed in conjunction with its French partner Renault.
Nissan also added that it would be supplying fuel cell and hybrid technologies to Renault.
