Plug Power and NexTech in solid oxide fuel cell development deal

Fuel cell specialist firms NexTech Materials and Plug Power are to collaborate in the development of a new solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) power system, it has been announced.

According to NexTech, the main target market of the new SOFC power systems will be the US military, although it is also expecting to see applications in wireless communications and stationary back-up power.

The joint project is set to include market research, fuel cell stack development and testing, system design and prototype construction.

It is expected to cost in the region of $3 million (£1.6 million), $1 million of which will come in the form of a grant from Ohio State's Third Frontier Fuel Cell Initiative programme.

"NexTech and Plug Power will hire approximately eight scientists and engineers to complete the research and development needed for this project," said Bill Dawson, president and chief executive of NexTech, speaking at the announcement of the deal.

US congressman for Ohio Pat Tiberi, who also spoke, backed the new technology development.

"We've heard about the potential of fuel cells for years," he said.

"NexTech is on the cutting edge of turning that potential into practical uses for the military, business and consumers. The company's joint development project with Plug Power is another step in making our state a leader in fuel cell development."
