Lolland, Denmark to become hydrogen and fuel cell-powered island

Fuel cell company IRD is to collaborate with local government authorities to turn the Danish island of Lolland and its capital Nakskov into a "living laboratory" for hydrogen-powered fuel cell technology, local press has reported.

According to Denmark's financial daily, the Borsen newspaper, IRD will work with Nakskov municipality officials to deliver working fuel cell solutions that will deliver power to homes, industry and the transport system.

The project will also receive government funding from the Danish Energy Authority, as well as Storstrom county authorities, with initial costs projected to be around 11.5 Danish kroner (£1.05 million), according to the Nakskov Hydrogen Society.

"Our goal is to use fuel cells to produce heat and electricity right at people's homes," said Nakskov's mayor, Flemming Bonne Hansen according to Borsen, adding that he hoped the investment in the region by fuel cell developers would also bring jobs to the local economy.

The first test facilities are due to be established on Lolland as early as mid-November, with further progress earmarked for next year.
