Renault, Nissan and Nuvera to Showcase Onboard H2 Generation for Fuel Cell Vehicle

Originally Published:20060601.

Renault was due to show off its onboard reformer based fuel cell research at the World Hydrogen Energy Conference in Lyons, France, as European Automotive Design went to press.

To avoid the problems of high-pressure or cryogenic storage and speed development of fuel cells without the delay involved in setting up a hydrogen distribution network. Renault, Nissan and Nuvera Fuel Cells have been working together since 2002 on reforming onboard liquid fuels into hydrogen-rich gas to supply the fuel cell.

The reformer cracks the long hydrocarbon molecule chains after which the gas is purified. The reformer can run on petrol, diesel or ethanol, so a fuel tank has been designed that can contain the different fuels. This option was chosen to reduce concerns about the future availability of hydrocarbons and means motorists can choose the cheapest fuel.
