WestStart-CALSTART is a non-profit organisation that works with the public and private sectors to develop advanced transportation technologies and foster companies that will help clean the air, lessen our dependence on foreign oil, reduce global warming, and create jobs. It was founded in 1992 as CALSTART, but rapidly expanded to address national and broader Western needs. It now operates as WestStart with CALSTART as its California operating division.
WestStart-CALSTART serves as an industry catalyst to spur advanced transportation technologies, systems and the companies that make them via its four main activities:

  • Strategic Brokering, Linking Partners & Technologies
  • Spurring Technology, Development & Demonstration
  • Providing Information, Industry Information & Analysis
  • Finding Solutions, Implementation & Commercialization Consulting

In November 2003, WestStart-CALSTART announced, that it is coordinating the National Fuel Cell Bus Technology Initiative (NFCBTI), envisioned as a 6-year, US$150-million dollar development effort to support the research, development, and demonstration of fuel cell and hydrogen technology. Participating corganisations include AC Transit, Ballard, Boeing, Coalition to Advance Sustainable Technologies, ECD Ovonics, Hydrogenics, ISE Research, Northeast Advanced Vehicle Consortium (NAVC), Quantum Technologies, Sunline Transit, Texaco Ovonic Hydrogen Systems, Thor Industries and the Tri-Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet).
