Organisation Description

Toyota is a large car manufacturer and builds vehicles in twenty-seven countries. Toyota is involved in the production of mass market hybrid electric vehicles, and is confident that fuel cell vehicles will follow naturally. It is investing heavily in the technology and has produced a number of prototypes. For instance, the FCHV-4, was unveiled in June 2001, and was based on the Kluger V mid-sized SUV and fuelled by hydrogen stored in a high pressure tank. Power comes from a 90kW fuel cell stack developed by Toyota. Tests are underway in Japan and California, with vehicles having been leased to the University of California and the Japanese Government.
In 2002 Toyota is creating a new fuel cell research centre to consolidate research and accelerate development. It will initially be staffed by 450 people.

Additionally, the company is also interested in small residential fuel cell applications. Toyota is taking part in the New Energy Foundation project (NEF) and the Japan Gas Association (JGA) demonstration project. Both programmes aim to commercialise small stationary fuel cells in Japan
