- Organisation Description
Tokyo Gas is a gas supplier and has continuously placed a high priority on the development of new technologies.
In 1972, Tokyo Gas joined the TARGET project, and began field tests of the 12 kW PC11 made by UTC in USA. Through a series of field-tests of the 40 kW PC18 and the 200 kW PC25 made by ONSI of UTC's subsidiary, Tokyo Gas has been contributing to the technical progress of the phosphoric acid fuel cell to commercial use ever since. In February 1996, Tokyo Gas acquired a 200 kW PC25C.
TG has been also supporting the development of domestic technology, starting a joint project with Fuji Electric to develop 50 kW and 100 kW units in 1986. Tokyo Gas is playing a main part in the national project to develop 1,000 kW PAFC now in operation at the Tokyo Gas Tamachi test-site. The company is challenging to establish the method for evaluating the life of cells, in cooperation with public research institutions, utilities and domestic PAFC manufacturers.
In July 2002, the company announced that it had developed a fuel cell (50 - 200kW) which converts food waste into electricity.
The company is also test driving a Mercedes F-Cell fuel cell vehicle which was delivered in October 2003.
In March 2004, Tokyo Gas announced that it will launch a 1kW SOFC small stationary unit by 2005. The units were developed together with Kyocera, Gastar and Rinnai and the company aims to sell them for around 2 million Yen. This appears to have been delayed but 2005 will see the launch of between 100 and 200 PEMFC residential systems.- Fuel Cell Staff
