Organisation Description

Nissan is a Japanese car manufacturer. It first presented a fuel cell concept vehicle at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, but it was not until 1999 that it launched a real prototype. Based on its Rnessa SUV and powered by methanol, the model included an electric traction motor and a regenerative charging system. In October 2000 another fuel cell prototype was unveiled, this time based on the Xterra SUV. Power was provided by a Ballard fuel cell system. Test drives of this vehicle (which also ran off reformed methanol) began in May 2001. In June 2001 Nissan announced that it had decided to develop fuel cell vehicles that run on gasoline in partnership with Renault. According to Japanese newspaper reports Nissan and Renault will spend $714 million on the project and aim to market a commercial fuel cell vehicle as early as 2005 (which is later than Nissan’s 1999 estimates of 2003-4).
A newly developed fuel cell urban vehicle ('Effis') was presented during the 37th Tokyo Motor Show in October 2003. The company announced plans to lease its first fuel cell vehicles to selected partners by March 2004.

Partners
In February 2003, Nissan and UTC Fuel Cells announced an agreement to joint-develop PEM fuel cells.
