Organisation Description

Formed in January 2001, MTI Micro Fuel Cells is developing direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) as a power source for portable electronics. A subsidiary of Mechanical Technologies, it has developed several generations of prototype DMFC units. In August 2002 it unveiled a simple DMFC system that can be scaled to applications ranging from chargers to battery replacements, for a wide range of portable devices. The prototype includes a replaceable methanol fuel cartridge, requires no pumps and works in any orientation (e.g., "upside down").
In November 2001 MTI announced that it planned to enter the mass market in 2004 with a micro fuel cell power source for mobile phone convergence devices. The company has shown various prototypes in 2001-2003.
