Organisation Description

Honda is a Japanese automobile and motorcycle manufacturer. It is dedicated to the development of low emission vehicles with its hybrid Insight, sales of which have far exceeded projections. Honda views hybrids as forerunners of mass market fuel cell vehicles, and has been working on fuel cells since 1989.

It has developed a number of vehicle prototypes, the latest, the FCX-V3, was exhibited in 2000, and is now being tested on public roads in Japan and California, where Honda has set up a small hydrogen production and fuelling station.

Although Honda is not sharing its technology with others, the company is working with Ford, DaimlerChrysler and others to develop fuelling systems, win public acceptance and study possibilities for commercial production. It aims to build in the region of 300 fuel cell vehicles a year in 2003. In December 2001, it announced that it will focus on fuel cells running on pure rather than reformed hydrogen.

Partners
A joint Honda-Stanford University research project has developed miniature fuel cells with ultra-thin gas channels. When connected in parallel on the same plane, they produce a higher output density than a conventional stacked layout.
