- Organisation Description
General Motors (GM) involvement in fuel cell development started already in 1964 and in 1968 a first minibus prototype was presented. In 1998, GMs European subsidiary OPEL presented a fuel cell powered Zafira minivan, one year later, a five-year technical agreement with Toyota was signed to jointly develop vehicle technologies, including fuel cells.
2000 saw the presentation of the Precept FCEV, a fuel cell electric vehicle and the liquid hydrogen fuel cell powered HydroGen1, an improvement on the fuel cell minivan Opel Zafira presented in 1999. In 2001, GM unveiled a Chevrolet S-10 pickup demonstrator featuring GM's fuel cell stack 2000. In 2002, GM unveiled the AUTOnomy concept which is the first vehicle designed from the ground up around a fuel cell propulsion system; and the Hy-wire concept, the worlds first drivable vehicle that combines a hydrogen fuel cell with by-wire technology.
In April 2003, the company announced the signing of an agreement with Dow Chemicals to jointly work on a fuel cell project, including all aspects of hydrogen production, storage and distribution; the first stationary fuel cell unit was deployed in February 2004. In June 2003, GM put a fleet of hydrogen-powered vehicles (HydroGen3) in regular service for FedEx delivery service in Tokyo. January 2005 saw the launch of the latest fuel cell prototype, the Sequel.
