Organisation Description

The German car manufacturer, DaimlerChrysler (DC) makes over four million vehicles a year. The company is at the forefront of fuel cell developments in the automotive business and is continuing to invest. The company started its Fuel Cell Project in 1996 although research began much earlier. DC’s fuel cell project comprises all vehicle segments from passenger cars to light duty vehicles and busses.
In 1994 the DC presented its first fuel cell powered vehicle, the NECAR 1 (“New Electric CAR”) based on a Mercedes-Benz cargo van. In 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2000 the company presented the technically improved and smaller fuel cell vehicles NECAR 2, 3, 4, 4a and 5. In 2002 a new fuel cell A-class, called F-Cell was presented. 60 of them will be tested at the customers in 2003-2005.
DC is also working on commercial vehicles. In 1997 the company unveiled a fuel cell powered bus, the NEBUS. A more developed Citaro bus model will be in use during the 2003-2006 CUTE project where the company will run 30 vehicles in a unique test programme across Europe.
Since 2001, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van with fuel cell technology has been undergoing trials as a prototype at the Hermes parcel service company in Hamburg under the hard conditions of daily commercial parcel deliveries. In 2003 the company signed a similar agreement with the parcel delivery company UPS.
