Organisation Description

Ballard was founded in 1979 to research and develop high energy batteries. Since 1983 the company has been developing PEM fuel cells, and is now also manufacturing and marketing this technology. Ballard is commercialising fuel cell engines for transportation applications and fuel cell systems for portable and stationary products. Ballard is also commercialising electric drives for fuel cell and other electric vehicles and power conversion products and is a Tier 1 automotive supplier of friction materials for power train components.

Ballard is partnering with a number of companies, including DaimlerChrysler, Ford, EBARA, ALSTOM and FirstEnergy, to commercialise its fuel cells. Ballard has also supplied fuel cells to Honda, Nissan, Volkswagen, Yamaha, Cinergy and Coleman Powermate, among others.

The two companies have moved into a new phase of their business relationship, with Ballard obtaining a licensing option for Millennium Cell's Hydrogen on Demand hydrogen fuel system and making a strategic investment in Millennium Cell.</p>
