Dr. Manfred Stefener, founder of SFC Energy AG, technology and market leader for portable, mobile, and off-grid power generation and distribution, has won the European Inventor Award in the small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SME) category together with Oliver Freitag and Dr. Jens Müller.
The team was one of 15 nominees for this year’s award. They received the award for the development of the first portable fuel cell on the basis of the direct methanol fuel cell technology and for the related patent granted in 2008. Dr. Stefener had led SFC until 2005, after that he was a member of the Company’s Supervisory Board until 2011. Dr. Müller, who today is a member of SFC Energy’s Supervisory Board, was SFC Energy’s CTO and COO until 2010.
The annual European Inventor Award, which was launched by the European Patent Office in 2006, pays tribute to the creativity of inventors, who use their technical, scientific and intellectual skills to make a contribution to technological progress and economic growth in the categories “Industry”, “Research”, “Small-to-medium-sized enterprises” (SME), “Non-European Countries”, and “Lifetime Achievement”. It is the only European Award to honor applied technology solutions.
SFC Energy today is technology and market leader for portable, mobile, and off-grid power generation and distribution. The direct methanol fuel cell technology is the Company’s core technology, on the basis of which SFC has sold almost 25,000 products world wide. SFC fuel cells are today used in the segments Industry (oil & gas, wind industry, traffic management, environmental technologies, telecommunication), Defense & Security (portable, mobile and vehicle-based power generators and field chargers for defense and government applications), and Consumer (leisure applications, i.e. motor homes, sail boats, cabins).
“We are happy about the recognition of the achievements of our pioneers”, says Dr. Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Energy AG. “The era of silent, lightweight, low emission power supply systems has only just begun.”
