UCLA Commuters Gain Free Fuel Cell Carpool

Toyota has leased four FCHV-adv FCEVs to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as part of the University's Sustainable Transport Innovation program. Toyota has already completed technical testing of the fuel cell hybrid vehicles and is now interested in gaining detailed long-term customer satisfaction feedback.

UCLA Commuters Gain Free Fuel Cell CarpoolUnder the program, University commuters who live within a few miles of existing hydrogen stations in Burbank, Torrance and Irvine, and who have clean licenses and similar work schedules can apply to be in one of the unique carpools. Each carpool will last for three months, with free hydrogen refuelling and car parking for the commuters.

The University's Transportation department is keen to lower its emissions, encourage carpooling and gauge what might motivate people to jump to green transportation - values that also intrigued Toyota.

Three cars will be on the road simultaneously, serving twelve commuters, with a back-up kept at the University. The scheme is planned to run for two to three years, which should allow over one hundred commuters to enjoy testing the vehicles.
