On-site Hydrogen Production at Steel Works Increases Production, Reduces Emissions

Air Products PRISM

Air Products has installed four of its PRISM hydrogen and nitrogen generation systems at international steel group ArcelorMittal’s Saint Chély d’Apcher site in southern France. The installation includes three PHG100 hydrogen generators and one GN700 nitrogen generator. The two companies signed for the provision of the equipment in July 2012.

The on-site production of hydrogen and nitrogen ensures an uninterrupted supply of gases at the site and has significantly increased the rate of steel production as a result. Furthermore, avoiding the need for deliveries of gas by tanker has reduced carbon dioxide emissions at the site and lowered logistics costs.

Air Products introduced new PRISM systems with higher outputs in June 2013. The systems combine the company’s proprietary reformer technology and pressure swing adsorption for a comparatively low cost solution.
