20 Mar 2013

US intellectual property law firm Heslin Rothenberg Farley & Mesiti P.C. has published its latest Clean Energy Patent Growth Index (CEPGI) report reviewing patent activity during 2012. The CEPGI monitors the granting of US patents by the US Patent and Trademark Office for the following sub-components: Solar, Wind, Hybrid/Electric Vehicles, Fuel Cells, Hydroelectric, Tidal/Wave, Geothermal, Biomass/Biofuels and other clean renewable energy. Overall the CEGPI saw growth of 30% in 2012 versus the previous year and fuel cell patents continue to lead the field and grew by 8% during the year.

CEPGI 2012

It comes as no surprise that automotive companies dominate the CEPGI, especially since it includes hybrid/electric vehicles in addition to fuel cells. Regionally the CEPGI saw the USA as its dominant region, followed by Japan, Korea and Germany. To download the full report, visit the CEPGI website.
