Toyota Announces Fuel Cell Vehicle Progress; Plans to Launch Fuel Cell Bus

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has announced the progress of development of environmental technologies as well as its vehicle deployment plans through 2015.

The announcement reports the following with regard to Toyota’s fuel cell vehicle development:

TMC's new fuel cell stack has more than twice the power density of the stack currently used in the FCHV-adv fuel cell vehicle prototype, at approximately half the size and weight. The new stack, with an output power density of 3 kW/L, will be used in the sedan-type FCV scheduled for launch around 2015 (above).

The performance of the fuel cell system as a whole has been further improved while cost has reduced. This has been achieved using a newly-developed, high-efficiency boost converter; increasing the voltage has made it possible to reduce the size of the motor and the number of cells needed in the system.

TMC and subsidiary Hino Motors are accelerating development of a new fuel cell bus, aiming for a 2016 launch.
