FuelCell Energy and Air Products to Jointly Market Stationary Fuel Cell Power Plants

15 Mar 2012

FuelCell Energy and Air Products have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together towards the market development of FuelCell Energy’s Direct FuelCell power plants, which simultaneously produce electricity, high-grade heat and hydrogen. After successfully collaborating on an installation at California’s Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) the two companies will now be working together to develop a market for the MCFC systems for: industrial users of hydrogen where the hydrogen, electricity and heat revenue streams can be fully utilised; and the development of hydrogen infrastructure through distributed generation of hydrogen – on-site or local production of hydrogen eliminates delivery costs and secures the reliability of supply. For example, at the existing OCSD installation, methane from a wastewater treatment plant is purified and fed through a Direct FuelCell where electricity to power the treatment plant is produced and hydrogen is extracted, purified to vehicle grade and piped to a nearby refuelling station.

"By combining our industry-leading fuel cell technology and expertise with the market reach, hydrogen processing, and distribution capabilities of Air Products, together we can create the hydrogen infrastructure with a solution that is ready today," said Chip Bottone, President and Chief Executive Officer, FuelCell Energy, Inc. "Our stationary fuel cell power plants are quite versatile and this initiative represents what we expect to be an efficient and cost effective manner of providing on-site hydrogen production in an environmentally friendly manner."
