Fuel Cell Scooter Given EC Approval

10 Mar 2011

Intelligent Energy has announced that the Suzuki Burgman Fuel Cell Scooter has been given Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA). The scooter, jointly developed by Intelligent Energy and Suzuki Motor Corporation, is the first fuel cell vehicle with this level of certification.

The result is a step towards full commercialisation of fuel cell motorcycles: if a prototype is tested under the EC Whole Vehicle Type Approval system and passes, vehicles or components of the same type are approved for production and sale within Europe without further testing.

The scooter, which uses Intelligent Energy’s proprietary air-cooled hydrogen fuel cell system, was first exhibited at the Tokyo Motor Show in October 2009 and was launched in Europe at London’s City Hall in February 2010. Intelligent Energy has been running a road testing program supported by the UK Government’s Technology Strategy Board and a fleet of the scooters will now be further tested in various public road conditions in the UK.
